The anarchy of Livorno comes from the so called "Leggi Livornine", which were laws especially promulgated by the Medici family in order to populate the city, back in the 16th Century. These laws (like a sort of social experiment) allowed people from every creed, social status, job, ethnic roots and language to freely settle in Livorno, where they could start a business without paying any kind of taxes. You can imagine how Livorno suddenly became a gateway of people from every part of the world: Jews, Armenians, prostitutes, Arabs and criminals started flowing to Livorno searching for a new life. The port of Livorno was in a very important position for the commerce in the Mediterranean and today it still is the real heart of the city.
